How a Sugar Dissolving Tank Works

A Sugar Dissolving Tank is used to dissolve granulated sugar into hot or cold water and produce a uniform sugar syrup. It is commonly used in beverage, dairy, juice, confectionery, pharmaceutical, and food-processing plants.

The process generally works in 7 steps:

  1. Water filling
A predetermined quantity of water is introduced into the SS tank through the inlet connection.
  2. Heating starts
If hot syrup is required, steam or hot water is circulated through the tank jacket. Heat transfers through the tank wall and raises the water temperature. Typical operating temperature can be around 60–90°C, depending on the process and required sugar concentration.
  3. Agitator starts
The top-mounted agitator is started before or during sugar charging. The impeller creates circulation inside the tank so that sugar does not simply accumulate at the bottom.
  4. Sugar charging
Granulated sugar is added through the top charging/manhole opening. The agitator continuously moves the water and sugar together.
  5. Sugar dissolves
The combination of heat + agitation + liquid circulation accelerates dissolution.

A simplified process is:

Water + Sugar → Agitation + Heat → Sugar Solution → Homogeneous Sugar Syrup

  1. Temperature and concentration control
A PT100 temperature sensor can measure syrup temperature. Depending on the plant design, a refractometer/Brix meter can be used to check sugar concentration.
  2. Syrup discharge
Once the sugar has completely dissolved and the required temperature/concentration is achieved, the outlet valve is opened. The syrup can then be transferred to a holding tank, blending tank, filtration system, or beverage processing line.
